ABOUT
OUR SPORT
FISH RESTORATION EFFORTS One of our most ambitious and ongoing programs/ projects has been raising
walleye fry to stockable size for the Niagara River. The project started in
1984, and in 1986 the first walleye were stocked in the mighty Niagara. In
1999 our Association had taken on another exciting project to further enhance
our surrounding fishery. In the spring of 1999 The NRAA began the process of pen
"IMPRINTING" King [chinook] Salmon in the Niagara River. These fish
were raised in mesh pens from the smolt size [2"] and held for
approximately 22 days. They were left "imprinted" to the Niagara
River after release. This has ensured a greater number of returning fish for
spawning in the Mighty Niagara. This pen- rearing- imprinting project will
continue and expand for many years to come. AGAIN done by all our membership
volunteers. In
the year 2000 and 2001 we did it all over again. We have begun raising rainbow trout in our rearing pens for the
first time and for the same "imprinting" purposes. This project has
been highly successful and in 2002 we will see more improvements.
